Please say a prayer for Bennie as he undergoes emergency heartworm extraction surgery with Dr Seymour at Jackson Veterinary Hospital.
Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) responded to a call about a dog in distress and found sweet Benny, severely emaciated and unable to walk. After examination and tests, the ACPS veterinarian believes Benny is suffering from Caval Syndrome, a serious condition caused by a mass of heartworms blocking blood flow to the heart. This is easily prevented with monthly heartworm medication, but sadly, Benny was neglected. Dr. Willson and the vet staff at ACPS did an amazing job stabilizing him, but he needs help now.
We've helped dogs with Caval Syndrome before, so we knew we had to step in when we saw ACPS's plea for help. Valerie Losego immediately arranged to pick him up, with help from Lynda Gridley and Franny Buffa.
Even though it was a Sunday, Dr. Bissell at Sandbridge Veterinary Center saw him right away, where we repeated radiographs and bloodwork. Dr. Bissell agrees that Caval Syndrome is likely, or possible heart failure secondary to a heavy load of heartworms. He had an echocardiogram today at Capital Vet, which confirmed the diagnosis. He is now starting a risky and complicated surgery to remove the heartworms.
Throughout this ordeal, Benny has remained sweet and loving. He needs our support and your prayers as we fight to save him.
