Betty White is a 12 year old Beagle who was scheduled for euthanasia at the shelter when her stray hold was up. We wanted to give this sweet girl a chance, so we took her into FUR.
Betty went to Tracy Fosterling as a temp foster and then on to her foster, Betsy Marquez. She had a rough time at first, not surprising for a senior dog whose life has just been turned upside down.
Through it all, Sweet Betty is the most loving and trusting girl we've met.
Betty definitely has some medical problems, but none that warrant euthanasia. Her biggest problems are her skin and her tail. She chewed her tail bloody due to fleas and flea dermatitis. It was so bad that her bone is exposed, and she has permanent nerve damage from the middle of her tail. The only safe plan is to amputate her tail. She has other problems associated with age. She can't hear, and her back legs appear to have some lameness. We're not sure if that's due to spondylosis in her spine, if it's lack of exercise and poor nutrition, or arthritis. Her bloodwork was a mess, which was not a surprise given her condition. Her heart sounded fine, but we did an echocardiogram just to make sure. Please say a prayer for Betty as she undergoes surgery today to amputate her tail. She’s getting the medical care she deserves, along with lots of love and TLC. At this point, we are doing everything we can to help this sweet, and oh so forgiving girl. We are praying that we can extend her life and give her at least a little time in the loving home that she deserved all along.
We never know what we're signing up for when we take in seniors or major medical cases. Taken one at a time, each of these problems can be addressed. Nothing we see so far indicates that she should have been euthanized. We just want to give her a chance and spoil her for whatever time she has left.

Sick and injured animals need help fast. Every donation helps, but Monthly donors give us flexibility to respond immediately when there is an emergency. When there is a hoarding case or a hurricane, a dog with a gunshot wound or a cruelty case, we have to act quickly. We don't have time to do a fundraiser, and wait for those funds to get to us. Your monthly donation can help us save lives again and again.
