Kai was a Bait Dog in Shocking Condition

Kai was a Bait Dog in Shocking Condition

Kai's Story:
Kai came into the shelter with some horrific wounds. We think he was a bait dog. Most of his wounds were from dog bites, except the wound all the way around his paw, which was caused by a ligature of some kind. We think a dog fighter tied his paw so he couldn't get away and had other “fighting dogs” attack him.
Seeing his grave condition, Brianna, the Union County ACO, took him to the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital. We then moved him to Palm Valley Veterinary Center, where Dr. Mack and his staff took great care of him.

In addition to open wounds all over, Dr. Mack diagnosed Kai with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA), likely caused by a tick borne pathogen. If he had tried to neuter Kai without running bloodwork first, Kai would have bled out on the table.

Dr. Mack kept Kai in medical boarding for weeks, treating his wounds and his IMHA. He also got hyperbaric therapy, which helped heal both the wounds and his anemia. This poor, sweet boy was in bad shape, but Dr. Mack and his staff took great care of him.

Kai is now completely healed, and he moved to a foster home with Kim, where he learned how to live inside as part of the family for the first time. When the foster had unexpected change in their living situation, Kai went to Board and Train at Pet Paradise, where our volunteer Jessica Cromer visited him often and took him on outings. Misty Exley, a FUR adopter and Pet Paradise Resort Manager, fell in love with Kai, and she introduced us to her close friend Jonathan, who adopted him.

Kai is now living a wonderful life, going on daily hikes, swimming in a pond, and generally getting spoiled. His new best friend is a horse, who is as infatuated with Kai as Kai is with him. Thank you to Dr. Mack, the Staff at Palm Valley, Kim, Jessica, Misty, and especially Jonathan, for helping this sweet boy find his happily ever after!

Sick and injured animals need help fast. Every donation helps, but Monthly donors give us flexibility to respond immediately when there is an emergency. When there is a hoarding case or a hurricane, a dog with a gunshot wound or a cruelty case, we have to act quickly. We don't have time to do a fundraiser, and wait for those funds to get to us. Your monthly donation can help us save lives again and again. To learn more, please visit: https://www.floridaurgentrescue.org/donatemonthly.
